Use pallet forks on the loader to pluck out root balls then use the bucket to pile them up. Before I got my 4x4 tractor (new Holland TC33D) and the skid steer (New Holland LS180), I used my backhoe to gig out the root balls, which works ok. I built a type of grate or multi-tined attachment that bolts to the bottom of the skid steer or backhoe . If you need to place a block under the balde to get it at the "right" angle, then either something is wrong with the dozer, or the person isn't proficient in grading/ dozer work. Also, backdragging makes a job look cheap. A grade looks much better when graded forward. Some people just cannot work a dozer for final grade work. One thing to watch out for is switching back and forth between the high and low sulfur fuels. I don't know how much it affects equipment like skidsteers and tractors, but my father used to run off-road fuel in his 1-ton truck.
