Best advice would be to narrow your definition on what you plan to do with it, weigh how important the dealer relationship is to you and demo all of the brands you narrow it down to. The S185 has Lots of power/flow and strength but a mini reaches and controls hammer so much better. I would not waste time w hammer on skidsteer. But I am mainlyrics excavator operator. Now size wise/ model sc16/Hb680 is likely ideal size for your mini x, but it's tool chisel is too narrow.
Wow I am surprised you say that about the kobelcos. I have ran them all and they run so much faster and smoother then any other machine I have ran. I have ran all brands with the exception of komatsu. I have time on deere 120s 200s 270s and 350s and they seem to run so much slower then the Kobelcos.
Just imagine if that chinese excavator makes it here, opens up shop and sells the same sized equipment for 0,000 less then the competition!!!! Then add dealer support with parts on hand. They will make a killing and the other brands will have to seriously rethink their prices, which are way too expensive anyway. I honestly don't comprehend any of the responses in this thread. Case's small, medium, and large machines are NOT Kobelcos, but are rather Sumitomos (with Link-Belt). Kobelco makes the NH line for North America; Fiat produces the NH line for Europe.
The bigger the attachment, and the more you need to reach, the bigger the machine needed. In general I think you need a 6-9 ton mini excavator, but a 5 ton may also do the job. I would get air conditioning/enclosed cab, and stick with major name brands like a Deere G50, G60, Kubota KX057, Takeuchi TB260, Cat 305, etc The only thing that the mini/skid combo can do, that the tlb can't, is dig in tighter access areas (though the mini is not much narrower than the tlb, maybe 12") and in situations that you MUST have full rotation of the digging machine. If your primary market is small residential or landscaping than that will make the mini/skid even more appealing.
